  • Mar 9, 2018 to Mar 10, 2018

  • Description:

    As the Crescent City gears up for New Orleans Fashion Week, a new event is on the horizon, set to challenge racial disparities in the fashion industry.

    The expo is, in part, in response to the Swedish retailer H&M’s recent controversial ad featuring a Black boy wearing a hoodie that bore the message, “Coolest monkey in the jungle.” The goal, according to event organizer Evangelist Melonie Pichon, is to feature independent fashion designers who desire diversity while valuing African American dollars.

    Pichon and her company Single Sister Entertainment plan to feature African American designers both in and out of Louisiana. The event will include a fashion show, vendors and design exhibitions.

  • Cynthia Holiday to Host Jazz in the Sanctuary Saturday, Feb. 24th, Shiloh Baptist Church, Plainfield, NJ.

  • Feb 24, 2018 from 11:00am to 1:00pm
  • Location: Shiloh Baptist Church
  • Description:

    Cynthia Holiday, jazz and blues song stylist, will
    host the premiere performance of the 2018 Jazz
    in the Sanctuary series. Ms. Holiday’s gifted
    vocals and natural inclination for jazz is attributed
    to her upbringing in Newark where music filled
    her home on any given day. Her stepfather,
    trumpeter Calvin Hughes, was a band leader and
    performed with such jazz greats as Count Basie,
    Frank Foster, Clark Terry and Eddie “Lockjaw”
    Davis. Since the release of her debut album, “All
    The Way”, on the Miles High Records Label,
    Ms. Holiday has made new fans and friends in
    the US and internationally. Most recently she
    served as judge in the Asian Dreams Jazz Vocal
    Competition followed by a performance with the TS Monk Septet in Osaka,
    Japan. WBGO Jazz88 FM host Sheila Anderson says: “Cynthia seeks to
    continue the tradition of jazz women who sing the blues, a style that has become
    a lost art among vocalists. I hear the humor of Helen Humes, the soul of
    Ernestine Anderson, the warm timber of Nancy Wilson and the story

    The massive militarization of the African continent has occurred under the radar for the casual observer. Even though the United States has over 800 military bases in some 70 countries throughout the globe, Africa is often left out of the conversation by peace, antiwar and progressive activists for a host of reasons. The forum will explore the following:

    • How US-sponsored counter-terrorism strategies have been contributing to deaths and disappearances of hundreds of people across the African continent;
    • The increased militarization of the African continent and its implications for resistance efforts by local communities and social justice activists in Africa;
    • The connection between the militarization of the African continent and Black communities in the United States;
    • Reasons why the peace, anti-war and progressive groups have left Africa out of the discussion when challenging US global military footprint;

    "CRUEL AND UNUSUAL”
    http://mobfilm.com/projects/cruel-and-unusual/

     A feature documentary telling the story of three men who
    have spent  longer in solitary  Confinement than any other prisoners
    in the US. Innocent of the crimes of which they  are accused, from their
    6 foot by 9 foot cells they campaigned for decades to end this Unconstitutional, cruel and unusual punishment. Following our film ‘In the Land of the Free…’ we have been shooting the ongoing story, resulting in a new feature documentary for Channel 4, which is now completed since the release of Albert Woodfox in 2016 after
    43 years in solitary confinement.   As far as I am concerned being a native New Yorker I give this film FIVE APPLES Out of 5!
