- Feb 24, 2018 from 11:00am to 1:00pm EST
- Location: Shiloh Baptist Church
- Latest Activity: Jan 20, 2020
Cynthia Holiday, jazz and blues song stylist, will
host the premiere performance of the 2018 Jazz
in the Sanctuary series. Ms. Holiday’s gifted
vocals and natural inclination for jazz is attributed
to her upbringing in Newark where music filled
her home on any given day. Her stepfather,
trumpeter Calvin Hughes, was a band leader and
performed with such jazz greats as Count Basie,
Frank Foster, Clark Terry and Eddie “Lockjaw”
Davis. Since the release of her debut album, “All
The Way”, on the Miles High Records Label,
Ms. Holiday has made new fans and friends in
the US and internationally. Most recently she
served as judge in the Asian Dreams Jazz Vocal
Competition followed by a performance with the TS Monk Septet in Osaka,
Japan. WBGO Jazz88 FM host Sheila Anderson says: “Cynthia seeks to
continue the tradition of jazz women who sing the blues, a style that has become
a lost art among vocalists. I hear the humor of Helen Humes, the soul of
Ernestine Anderson, the warm timber of Nancy Wilson and the storytelling of
Marlena Shaw, but make no mistake, what you hear is pure Cynthia Holiday.”
The concert, “Spiritual Impressions” featuring pianist James Weidman, is also a CD
release party. Other featured artists are: Ruth Naomi Floyd –Vocals; Anthony E.
Nelson, Jr. – Reeds; Beldon Bullock – Bass; and Tony Jefferson – Drums.
The concert will take place at 4 pm on Saturday, Feb 24, 2018 in the sanctuary of Shiloh
Baptist Church, 515 W. 4th St. Plainfield, NJ.
There is no admission charge, but
there will be a freewill offering.
