Wayman Tisdale—In Memoriam

May 21, 2009Raynard JacksonLast Friday, I received the shocking news of the sudden death of my good friend, Wayman Tisdale. Tisdale played basketball for 3 years at Oklahoma University and 12 years in the N.B.A. (Indiana, Sacramento, and Phoenix).Upon retiring from basketball, he went on to have a critically acclaimed music career as a jazz bassist. He recorded a total of 8 CDs beginning in 1995 (“Power Forward” on the Motown Label). His last CD, Rebound (2008), was written and released during h

Where I come from

In nineteen sixty seven, tanks and armed troops moved past this house towards Grand River and West Grand Blvd and thisI was three years old, that corner was walking distance from both of my family's home and both of my grandmothers' homes at that time.

This is just around the corner from where Big Four (Detroit Police Unit S.T.R.E.S.S.) were known to have beaten young men to death and left them in trash cans behind local businesses. Down the street from the home of David Nelson of the Last Poets

Has anyone paid attention to the expanding list of free tools, instructional material and services meant for collaborative enterprises, especially for mass communication media and alternative energy?I don't know what anyone is focused on, but I'm looking at the gaps and holes in our communities, with a personal and rather passionate interest in mass media and energy.Because a lot of our community's attention is placed in consuming shiny, tightly, packaged, melodramatic, advertising driven conten

Seeking forgiveness

I'm posting this because I need to muster up the courage to seek forgiveness from someone that I've hurt. The fact that I love this person more than air is irrelevant to the truth that I caused them pain.I feel the need to reach out to them to offer them support while they're dealing with an even greater pain.I'm putting this into the universe in the way that is most comfortable for me.Because in some odd way this seems somewhat more lasting than just speaking it aloud.

Should We Save Black Radio?

Live or Let Die:Should We Save Black Radio?Paul Scott"I can't explain why Hip Hop died or the fact that it did and no one cried. "Big Swagg (local artist)Funerals are funny things, sometimes. Never mind that the dearly departed cheated on his wife, borrowed a small fortune of unpaid loans from friends and habitually kicked his neighbor's dog, according to the pastor during the eulogy, the man was a saint.I thought about that scenario when I heard folks mourning over the impending doom of black r

by Kwasi SeituNancy Pelosi is trying to deny that which is applicable to the entire Congress with regard to the international criminality of George “Baby Doc” Bush’s “War on Terrorism,” which is that they went along with and approved of the ends justifying the means, even if that meant subjecting people to torture. Even though America has yet to admit that it engaged in torture, referring to its conduct as “enhanced interrogation techniques” or “what some people call torture,” it is not doing a

Yep. It happened to me in St. Clair Shores. I know a lot of stories about Black men round these parts begin with those very same words, but for some reason I didn't think that day that one of those stories would be one of mine.

I didn't think I would be frightening the shite out of some white w

Michael Steele--Chairman of the Bored

May 14, 2009Raynard JacksonMichael Steele, chairman of the Republican National Committee, is more like chairman of the bored. If committee members would spend half as much time fighting Democrats and President Obama as they spend fighting Steele, maybe the party wouldn’t be in such disarray. In all my years in this party, I have never seen any other chairman micro-managed to this extent. It is well documented that Steele got off to a rocky start, but either he is going to be chairman or he’s not.

Nigeria’s Theater of the Absurd

“The people who are trying to make this world worse are not taking a day off ….how can I? Light up the darkness!” - Bob MarleyMost people in the Arts, or more specifically, theater and acting world will know what the Theatre of the Absurd is: A designation for particular plays written by a number of primarily European playwrights in the late 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s, as well as to the style of theatre which has evolved from their work. Black History, R. I. P.?

by Dr. Pamela D. ReedNow that Barack Obama is President of the United States, why don't we just pretend that America wasn't built on slaveholding? If the spate of recent "post-racial" articles suggesting that we need no longer commemorate the African American struggle for freedom and equality in this country is any indication, this seems to be where we're heading. This is a classic case of the phenomenon called selective history/memory, or as some have termed it, historical amnesia. We've been bomb
