By launching the "Challenge des 1000", France is inviting 1000 African entrepreneurs to come and present their solutions at the Cité des Solutions, an exhibition dedicated to projects and solutions for sustainable cities and territories, which will be held during the 28th Africa-France Summit (Bordeaux, 4-6 June 2020).

Applications are open until 31 January 2020.

The selection of contractors will be based on the following criteria :

• To be an African entrepreneur, with an activity related to one of the 7 districts of the Cité des Solutions;
• Gender parity of the 1000 Entrepreneurs;
• Geographical balance in terms of the origin of the Entrepreneurs;

The U.S., with more than 2 million people locked down in its prisons and immigrant detention camps, leads the world in incarcerating its people. It has more people in prison, and the largest percentage of its population in prison, than any country in the world today-- larger than any country in the history of the world.

More than 60 percent of these more than 2 million people are Black or Latino, and they are being forced to face the deadly coronavirus without consistent access to soap and water, without masks, with no ability to do “social distancing.”

This literally means that the sentences that have them locked in this country's dungeons can become death sentences, and in fact have already become death sentences for hundreds of incarcerated people.

Per(Sister): Incarcerated Women of Louisiana shares the stories of currently and formerly incarcerated women in Louisiana and shines a light on the myriad issues as identified and expressed by the women themselves. The exhibition presents works from more than 30 artists who created new works based on the personal stories of the persisters. Stories of loss, hope, despair, survival, triumph, and persistence demonstrate the universal struggles faced by communities impacted by incarceration and the personal resilience of each woman featured.

Per(Sister) originated at the Newcomb Art Museum of Tulane University under the leadership of museum director Monica Ramirez-Montagut assisted by curator Laura Blereau, and was developed in equal partnership with Syrita Steib and Dolfinette Martin with additional support provided by Operation Restoration and Women with a Vision.

While other advanced nations are seeing continual increases to their quality-of-life indices, the only thing the U.S. has managed to consistently increase is its prison population. With a highly segregated education system that relies too heavily on invalid standardized testing and punitive disciplinary tactics, the school-to-prison pipeline is only strengthening for the poor, Black. Further, considering that the crime rate has steadily dropped and stagnated over the past few decades, this makes the negative correlation between declining crime and police militarization, or the rapid expansion of the prison industrial complex much more glaringly apparent and disturbing.
