Per(Sister): Incarcerated Women of Louisiana shares the stories of currently and formerly incarcerated women in Louisiana and shines a light on the myriad issues as identified and expressed by the women themselves. The exhibition presents works from more than 30 artists who created new works based on the personal stories of the persisters. Stories of loss, hope, despair, survival, triumph, and persistence demonstrate the universal struggles faced by communities impacted by incarceration and the personal resilience of each woman featured.
Per(Sister) originated at the Newcomb Art Museum of Tulane University under the leadership of museum director Monica Ramirez-Montagut assisted by curator Laura Blereau, and was developed in equal partnership with Syrita Steib and Dolfinette Martin with additional support provided by Operation Restoration and Women with a Vision.Please join us for the opening celebration with the artists and persisters

Girls Behind Bars: A Historic Wrong and the Fight to End It

March is Women's History Month. The history of incarcerating girls is fraught with race and gender bias. Labeled “delinquent,” “incorrigible,” and “immoral,” early , criminalized girls for disobedience and resistance to strict gender norms. This legacy lives on today, especially for girls of color. However, the possibility of ending girls’ incarceration in ten years is tangible.
Join us for a conversation with Lindsay Rosenthal, Project Director of Vera’s Initiative to End Girls’ Incarceration; Dr. Sydney McKinney, Executive Director of National Black Women’s Justice Institute; Dr. Shabnam Javdani, Associate Professor of Applied Pyschology at NYU; Dr. Cheryl D. Hicks, Associate Professor of Africana Studies & History at the University of Delaware; and social justice activist Cali JordanGotay to unpack the history of gender policing, and the movement for reform.
