    In 1971, Eddie Conway, Lieutenant of Security for the Baltimore chapter of the Black Panther Party, was convicted of murdering a police officer and sentenced to life plus thirty years behind bars. Paul Coates was a community worker at the time and didn't know Eddie well – the little he knew, he didn't much like. But Paul was dead certain that Eddie's charges were bogus. He vowed never to leave Eddie – and in so doing, changed the course of both their lives. For over forty-three years, as he raised a family and started a business, Paul visited Eddie in prison, often taking his kids with him. He and Eddie shared their lives and worked together on dozens of legal campaigns in hopes of gaining Eddie's release. Paul's founding of the Black Classic Press in 1978 was originally a way to get books to Eddie in prison. When, in 2014, Eddie finally walked out onto the streets of Baltimore, Paul Coa

    To bolster Wilmington's recent efforts to support racial justice reforms and the ideals espoused by the Black Lives Matter movement, Mayor Mike Purzycki today announced a series of community-created and supported events and visual art initiatives that the Mayor said sends an important message about Wilmington's support for equality and fairness.

    Mayor Purzycki said recent meetings with community representatives, such as artist and musician Richard Raw and artist and community organizer Vanity Constance and which included input from City Council President Hanifa Shabazz, have produced upcoming events and art installations for which Wilmington should feel proud.

    On Sunday, June 28th, the Malcolm X Commemoration Committee (MXCC) will host a special virtual roundtable to mark the 56th anniversary of the launching of the Organization of AfroAmerican Unity(OAAU)!

                The roundtable is entitled ‘Remembering Malcolm X And The OAAU:Organizing For PanAfricanism-Past And Present.’

                This moving talk will be hosted ‘Live!’ on Facebook at 4pm on the Facebook page of the Malcolm X Commemoration Committee.

                The gathering is free, but the night is dedicated to beloved political prisoner Dr. Mutulu Shakur, who is suffering from Bone Cancer. Organizers are trying to raise at least $500. for the pioneering acupuncturist.

              Today, Monday, June 8th, the People’s Organization for Progress (P.O.P.) will host a rally at the Federal Building, 970 Broad Street Newark at 3pm.

              It will be the organization’s second protest in response to the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

              Last week, under the leadership of Lawrence Hamm, its founding chairman and now a serious candidate for the US Senate, P.O.P. led a protest of 12,000 people condemning the Floyd killing without incident.

              This protest will also demand that the NJ Attorney General Gurbir Grewal reopen the case of Earl Faison, who was killed by Orange Police officers in April 1999.
