THE ROOM RENTERS
Someone with more wisdom than I stated the matter plainly: “When immorality floods the land collectively, it is because EACH of us individually have tolerated the SAME immorality in their OWN lives.”
Please allow me to get KJV biblical for a moment. Two Old Testament men: Nehemiah (who helped to rebuild Jerusalem) and Daniel (one of the more notable of the Old Testament major prophets) sought God in prayer and did something rather unusual for their day. They EACH not only cited the national sins of their day but cited their participation in such sins—thus admitting and repenting of their OWN involvement in those sins, whether by thought, action or deed.
Oh yes, BOTH men had to deal with ‘Room Renters’. Critics of their successful efforts.
Where did my column title originate? Back in 1942, a B & W flick entitled “The Talk of the Town” provided my inspiration. At one point in the film, Cary Grant and Ronald Colman were in a heated discussion on the merits of law, the Constitution, and America. Grant accused Colman’s character of being ‘detached’ from real life, citing the following observation: “…you don’t live in this country, you merely rent a room.” In short? Colman’s character knew the law as a lawyer but did not have the sense to understand how there was a need to be humane (but not stupid) in the application of the law. Colman was a ‘Room Renter’ in Grant’s view.
And, the title stuck!
Lawyers and judges are NOT the only ones who may claim the status of Room Renters. Many of those whom we’ve seen in podcasts, in social media, and on cable and ‘legacy’ news broadcasts fall into the same status. Why? Simply put, many of the ‘talking heads’ do NOT live in the same neighborhoods in which you live—but happily influence your wallets and cashless devices to put YOUR money towards their pet cause of the day. Further, their kids do NOT attend school with your children—but these electronic Room Renters will push CRT into the schools of YOUR kids, but THEIR kids are learning the three Rs so they may be successful and employable.
Room Renters. The same term may also be applied to those media folk who write for your local and national newspapers and magazines. Also included in this category are those who are actors and actresses involved with the big, small, and smaller (social media) screens. We may include those who put on the awards shows where the Hollywood, Media and Sports coven gather endlessly to cast their pro-abortion spells, pat themselves on the back and spout their social dogma of the week—and why society should care about it.
Lastly—unfortunately—we MUST include those who are in American local churches—from the pulpit to the pew—who do their level best to ‘block’ the progress of TRUE and successful Christians who want to see the work of Jesus Christ advance to where it is supposed to be before the Lord calls us home!
But, I digress!
At the bottom line, a Room Renter does NOT have skin in the game, nor do they want to. They are not out there on the field ‘mixing it up’ against heavy opposition. The Room Renter has a plush seat in the upper rows of a stadium (or a padded pew) while others are playing and competing on the field of life. Yes, the Room Renter spouts their opinions to call attention to themselves and away from the efforts of the man taking the risks, suffering the blows, and gathering the bruises to become successful. Room Renters are seldom alone—while the man on the field of competition—is alone.
Two recent examples of Black brothers on the field of life who have achieved and have brought out a host of Room Renters—both Black and non-Black—to flap their well-paid mouths about and against their efforts, and I’ll be through with my writings this time around.
First, a tip of the hat to ‘Coach Prime’—Deion Sanders—who came into coaching football with an investment of sweat, money, and his own family. Sanders loves the Lord. Sanders was led to coach the Jackson State University football program and turn it into a powerhouse. Sanders took a team and a program from nowhere to somewhere in three seasons. What makes his success even sweeter is that he did it at an HBCU, which, up till his arrival, had been regarded as ‘flyover country’ for the National Football League.
Now, the same Room Renters that were cheering him for his courage and success in a small pond are getting out the arrows and knives because Sanders ‘dared’ to take his success to a bigger and better football program. Colorado saw his success and came a-knocking—which is what being ‘at the next level’ is all about. Sanders also shared his faith in God during his JSU tenue—which further antagonized the Room Renters.
Sanders did it the right way—and was sought out by a better football program.
THIS is the American Dream, people! THIS is the reward for success! Have men been of the last two generations become so ‘feminized’ and browbeaten by the Room Renters—of BOTH sexes—that we have forgotten the objective—and rewards—of EARNED success the RIGHT way? Sanders prospected for football ‘gold’ using his own tools, influence, and tenacity, and turned a football program around.
Mediocre men do NOT change themselves, their marriages, their families, nor their communities. Mediocre men may be ‘desired’ by our feminized society, but they DO NOT rise to the levels of success and struggle that marks a man as a MAN!
Sanders DARED to overcome the odds and fulfill his objective. He was called up by a bigger and better school, a school that wanted to re-ignite their connection to doing things in a godly manner. That’s doing it the right way, with NO affirmative action handouts, ‘Me Too’ Protests, Antifa riots or BLM manipulation. Sanders—at the risk of his own physical health, in a city that could NOT provide an adequate water supply (go do your homework and research on this point)—achieved success.
‘Coach Prime’ was called up to a bigger pond! THAT is how success works! Someone will eventually recognize TRUE success and WANT to bring the successful into their fold to make THEIR organization BETTER!
It has happened to me during my lifetime, and I am glad to see it happen to Sanders.
Room Renters, folks, want you to be ‘successful’ based on THEIR terms…NOT yours!
Room Renters will acknowledge your success—while at the same time couching their jealousy and envy in their commentaries ABOUT your success and try to tear you down and negate your achievement—even though it has taken place RIGHT in front of them WITHOUT their permission! By the way, Room Renters will attempt to piggyback your success—especially IF you are a Black man—with their ungodly agenda!
Jesus Christ had another term for Room Renters during his earthly ministry. He called them ‘Pharisees’. And—IF you know your KJV Bible—the Pharisees had a LOT to say about the Miracles of Jesus, the Preaching of Jesus, and the earthly Ministry of Jesus. Of course, the Pharisees had their own ‘followers’ who were ‘chained’ to their ‘Room Renter’ traditions so much so that they did NOT want to recognize the works of God—right in FRONT of them!
My second example of the wrath of the Room Renters took place in Georgia on the political battlefield recently. Two Black brothers by the names of Raphael Warnock, a Democrat and Herschel Walker, a Republican slugged it out for a seat in the US Senate. After what seemed to be a year-long effort, Warnock emerged victorious in a close contest. I’m not going to talk political party or ‘reasons’ for victory or defeat. However, I just wanted folks to realize that it was NOT that long ago where Black men in the South could NOT run for political office—even in the ‘Peach’ state. Oh, yes…IF a Black man ‘tried’ to run for office? He was met by a rope.
The Room Renters are blissfully (or deliberately ignorant) of such history.
My congratulations go to BOTH men because they had what it took to be strong to the finish.
To the Room Renters in the house? My final advice is that they need to go back and RE-READ what the late President Theodore ‘Teddy’ Roosevelt wrote about critics. It is a writing that has stood the test of time—and Room Renters. As for me and MY house, we serve the Lord—NOT Room Renters!
