March 19, 2008 Press Release The O.A.A.U. (The Organization of Afro-American Unity) invites the Community to celebrate the Annual Malcolm X Day and Pilgrimage to the resting place of Malcolm X on Monday, May 19, 2008. This year will beEl Hajj Malik El Shabazz's (Malcolm X) 83nd Birthday anniversary and the 42nd year of pilgrimage since our fallen leader's assassination. The Pilgrimage will be led by Bro. Rodnell Collins, the nephew of Malcolm Xand President of the O.A.A.U. Buses and Cars will assemble at the Harlem StateOffice Building on 125th Street and Adam ClaytonPowell Blvd at 9:00 am and proceed to Ferncliff Cementary in Hartsdale, NY at 10:00 am. There will bethe traditional Ceremony that will last approximatelyone hour and will return to Harlem to take part in several activities and rallies sponsored by many organizations throughout the day. The O.A.A.U. initiated the pilgrimage in 1965, afterthe burial of Malcolm X, to honor and show respect forour people's fallen leader as well as to educatefuture generations about the legacy of Malcolm X and his effort to liberate African People's minds and bodies. The ceremony was designed by Sister EllaCollins, the sister of Malcolm X and then President ofthe O.A.A.U., and was led by her until Prof. James Small was appointed as the Vice President of the O.A.A.U. and the Coordinator of the May 19 - Malcolm XCelebration. We ask pilgrims to dress appropriately for the weather, bring liquids and a light snack, pay close attention to the children and elderly that are coming, respect the cemetery grounds and follow proper road rules. We wish to thank all organizations for their support and involvement in the pilgrimage and events following including but not limited to the First World Alliance,andthe Malcolm X Commemoration Committee.
