UNSUNG ACTIVIST SCHOLAR ANCHORING SUNDAY SYMPOSIUM ON 50TH ANNIV OF MALCOLM X’S MOST CLASSIC SPEECH!
In 1968, he was front and center in the Black Student takeover of Columbia University and played key roles in both the national Black student movement and the movement to create Africana Studies Programs at American colleges and universities.
In 1990 and 1991, he co-organized, along with Abdul Alkalimat, an enormous conference in New York on Malcolm X called ‘Malcolm X Speaks in the 90s.’
In 1994, he authored one of the most important, yet underappreciated books on Malcolm X, ‘From Civil Rights To Black Liberation: Malcolm X and the Organization of American Unity’(South End Press).
Many felt that he should have been given the post to oversee Malcolm’s papers at Columbia and from which to develop the first meaningful biography of Malcolm, not the late Manning Marable.
He is Professor Bill Sales.
On Sunday, November 10th, Sales will be sharing a platform with the formidable James Small and Dowoti Desir to observe the 50th anniversary of what they are calling “the most seminal revolutionary Black speech of the 20th century,” The Message To The Grassroots by the immortal Malcolm X.
It is being organized by the Malcolm X Commemoration Committee.
Zayid Muhammad, the organization’s press officer and principal organizer for the event, had this to say about Sales.
“Bill should have gotten the post at Columbia University overseeing Malcolm’s papers that Manning Marable ultimately disgraced.
“Bill Sales is not an armchair scholar out of touch with our people’s struggle,” he added.
“He launched an incredible career that we are all proud of, one that is organically linked to that struggle.
“He is not only Columbia alumni,” he continued.
“He was among those kicking the doors in at Columbia so more people who look like the community Columbia is surrounded by could get a chance to go there and be respected for who and what they are.
. “He would have done an awesome job,” he finished emphatically.
The event takes place at CEMOTAP, 135 Rockaway Blvd, Ozone Pk Queens, NY.
Doors open at 3pm.Donation $10.
