    In 1968, he was front and center in the Black Student takeover of Columbia University and played key roles in both the national Black student movement and the movement to create Africana Studies Programs at American colleges and universities.
    In 1990 and 1991, he co-organized, along with Abdul Alkalimat, an enormous conference in New York on Malcolm X called ‘Malcolm X Speaks in the 90s.’
    In 1994, he authored one of the most important, yet underappreciated books on Malcolm X, ‘From Civil Rights To Black Liberation: Malcolm X and the Organization of American Unity’(South End Press).
    Many felt that he should have been given the post to oversee Malcolm’s papers at Columbia and from which to develop the first meaningful biography of Malcolm, not the late Manning Marable.
