Celebrate Gullah/Geechee Famlee Day at Mosquito Beach, Sea Island, SC
- Jul 28, 2017 to Jul 29, 2017
- Location: Island Breeze, Mosquito Beach
- Description:
(7 July 2017, Charleston, SC, Gullah/Geechee Nation) Charleston County, South Carolina is the place of origin for the Gullah/Geechee culture. Gullah/Geechee people brought their African traditions with them within the enslavement vessels that they were held captive in as they journeyed across the Middle Passage. Many have come to the shorelines of South Carolina to stand on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean to feel the ancestral energies of the Africans that have come to be known as the “Gullah/Geechee.”
During the period of segregation many people of African descent were unable to stand on the sandy shores of the Atlantic Ocean. Instead of enduring harassment and discrimination at “colored sections” of areas that are now part of South Carolina’s state parks, Gullah/Geechees often developed their own Black townships and beaches. Amongst the list of Black beaches and gathering locations in South Carolina were “Riverside Beach,” “Frasier Beach,”“Remley’s Point,” “Peter Miller Pavilion,” Se

Thomas Mapfumo has been at the cutting edge of the political struggle in his native Zimbabwe, Africa for over 20 years, even as he's become a major figure on the world music scene.
From the bloody years of the country’s liberation war in the ‘70s, right through the present economic and political crises, Mapfumo has used his revolutionary, spiritually charged music to decry injustice and highlight the historical and cultural issues that underlie the news headlines. He and the Blacks Unlimited play Chimurenga music, (or music for the struggle of the people), a unique African music genre whose beats are traditional and timeless. They are delivered through an electric fusion of melodious lyrics accompanied by sounds of the African thumb piano (mbira) and the guitar.

"Rezoning Harlem: The Battle over Harlem's Future" screened by Liberation Flicks, July 14, Harlem NYC.
- Jul 14, 2017 from 3:00pm to 6:00pm EDT
- Location: The Justice Center En El Barrio
- Description: Liberation Flicks invites you to our monthly Film Showing!
Rezoning Harlem: The Battle over Harlem's Future documents the 2008 struggle against rezoning 125th street, highlighting the work of activists who fought to protect Harlem from billionaire developers and their predatory rezoning plans.
Rezoning Harlem and the fight against gentrification that it documents is relevant today, as developers are attempting to rezone East Harlem, to build luxury housing and to displace residents. And rather than defend the neighborhood, the community board is conceding to the rezoning plan with a lukewarm no "with conditions" vote- all at the expense of East Harlem residents.
Join us for a special showing of Rezoning Harlem at the Justice Center en El Barrio. Afterwards we will discuss the film and what we can do to fight back against gentrification and displacement in East Harlem.

See you on Friday!
