Description: Excitement continues to grow as the NAACP heads toward its 99th Annual Convention, being held July 12-17 in Cincinnati, just months ahead of its centennial celebration. Themed “Power, Justice, Freedom, Vote,” this year’s annual gathering of more than 8,000 NAACP members, delegates and visitors will be held at the Duke Energy Center and kicks-off a series of events leading up to the association’s centennial Feb. 12, 2009. “This year’s convention is a culmination and celebration of all the NAACP represents,” said National Board of Directors Vice Chair and Convention Planning Committee Chair Roslyn M. Brock. “As we approach the next century of social justice activism, we remain empowered and committed to a progressive agenda that demands fairness and prosperity for all. Alpha Phi Alpha 102nd Anniversary Convention

Description: Baltimore, MD (BlackNews.com) - For more than 100 years, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. has been committed to serving communities -- and it is during its largest yearly gathering where members from across the nation converge upon a city to make a difference. The nation's first and largest African-American intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity will host its 102nd Anniversary Convention from July 17 - 21, 2008 in Kansas City, MO, and will feature several major community service initiatives focusing on national and local issues. Yoruba Culture To Take Place in Havana

Description: In a press conference on Tuesday, Antonio Castañeda, president of the Yoruba Association of Cuba —the event organizer— said some 45 presentations will be made during the encounter on topics “ranging from spirituality to the most profound roots of our culture,” as quoted by Granma newspaper. He said the gathering will be divided into three general areas which are science, culture and religion and will include concerts featuring folkloric and traditional groups and video clips screenings. Castañeda added that there are 23 Cuban Yoruba associations based outside the country and that the majority of Cubans practice the Yoruba cultural tradition.
