45TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE MARCH ON WASHINGTON AT LINCOLN MEMORIAL Rosa and Raymond Parks Institute for Self Development host commemoration WHAT: The Rosa and Raymond Parks Institute, founded by Rosa L. Parks in 1987, will be leading commemorative activities on the Mall in Washington DC to celebrate the many victories and progress that has been made since the March on Washington in 1963. Congressmen John Lewis and John Conyers will speak about this commemoration at the Democratic National Convention in Denver. WHEN: Thursday, August 28th from 10am – 7pm WHERE: Lincoln Memorial, Washington DC Speakers: From DC- Wyatt T. Walker (PWF student Jaima Walker); Edith Scott Bagley, Dorothy Height; Representative from The King Center: From Denver- Congressmen Walter Fauntroy, John Lewis and John Conyers. Music from the Movement performed by Bernice Johnson Reagan and Pete Seeger. MORE: The backdrop for the event will be voter registration, a display on Voting Rights and stories as told by participants in the movement. ABOUT MARCH ON WASHINGTON Organized by a group of civil rights, labor, and religious organizations, the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom occurred on August 28, 1963 and was attended by over 200,000 citizens advocating for civil rights. Among the many speakers was Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. who delivered his historic "I Have a Dream" speech (which he developed for the Detroit March 2 months previous) promoting racial harmony at this event on the Lincoln Memorial.
