Juneteenth: What It Means
Diane Sears, Publisher of "In Search of Fatherhood" Magazine (which is available on line) sent this item along on Juneteenth. It is short, quick, and to the point:
As we observe Juneteeth on 19 June 2024, we should contemplate what really occurred on 19 JUNE 1865.
Here is what really happened:
Although the Civil War ended on 4 April 1865 and the Emancipation Proclamation which became the law of the land in the United States on 1 January 1863 which mandated that on 1 January 1863 all enslaved Africans on plantations in Slave States were to be released and set free, plantation owners in Texas refused to obey the law and release/set free enslaved Africans.
Several months after the end of the Civil War (which ended on 4 April 1865 with the surrender of General Robert E Lee who commanded all Confederate soldiers), the Union (United States Government) sent a telegram in early June 1865 to Texas plantation owners ordering them to release all enslaved Africans. Texas Plantation owners ignored the Order and refused to set free/release the enslaved Africans. Shortly thereafter, on 19 June 1865, at least approximately 2,500 Union Soldiers-- a. number of whom were of African descent -- arrived in Galveston, Texas heavily armed with cannons, gatling guns, revolvers, and repeating rifles to enforce the law and release/set free enslaved Africans. In response, on 19 JUNE 1865, Texas plantation owners immediately released/set free our Ancestors.
Also, the current Union League at 140 South Broad Street in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is the successor organization of the Union League which mustered into service Colored soldiers (Native Americans and souls of African descent) to fight in the Civil War for the Union.
Not bad for a guest columnist--especially today. Now, if we can ONLY get the federal government to pay Reparations--from that promisary note our ancestors was given at the time of slavery. Every other race that has been WRONGED by Uncle Sam has been paid off...except US. Keep the history alive in our minds.
