The Malcolm X Grassroots Movement condemns the targeting and harassment of community organizations by the New York Police Department.  The recently released NYPD intelligence report documenting the surveillance of our organization surrounding the 2008 Sean Bell case, reveals that the NYPD, not only violates the civil rights of individuals in our community, but also our organizations.

MXGM calls for an end to the ongoing police brutality committed against individuals in our community as well as end to the monitoring of organizations attempting to protect civil and human rights.

The Malcolm X Grassroots Movement is a community organization that does legally protected work in Central Brooklyn. Through our work, we call for community accountability of the NYPD and prosecution of police responsible for brutalizing and murdering our people, independent prosecution of police misconduct cases, an end to the increased militarization of the NYPD, and an immediate end to the unconstitutional stop and frisk practices.

It is clear to us that the targeting of our organization by the NYPD is a direct response to the police accountability work we have been engaged in since our chapter's founding in 1995.  In 2005 three members of our organization were unlawfully arrested while conducting our Cop Watch patrol and today we recognize the continued surveillance of our organization as harassment.

With so many unarmed civilians killed by the NYPD, the resources spent monitoring community organizations should be spent investigating those murders and securing justice for the families who have lost loved ones at the hands of the police.

And after many years, things still have not changed! The political prisoners we work to free were targeted by these same tactics over 30 years ago under COINTELPRO.  Ironically, many of those same organizers were also working to address police brutality and misconduct in communities of color.

In spite of our being targeted and the impact it may have on our organization's resources and membership, we will continue our work to fulfill our organization's objectives of holding the NYPD accountable to the communities they patrol.
