October 8, 2009Raynard JacksonIn pondering the state of the Republican Party since last year’s election, I wondered what would happen if those involved in the party was sued in a court of law. If elected officials and activists were accused of being a Republican, would there be enough evidence to convict them?According to the 2008 Republican platform, “This is a platform of enduring principle, not passing convenience-the product of the most open and transparent process in American political history. We offer it to our fellow Americans in the assurance that our Republican ideals are those that unify our country: Courage in the face of foreign foes. An optimistic patriotism, driven by a passion for freedom. Devotion to the inherent dignity and rights of every person. Faith in the virtues of self-reliance, civic commitment, and concern for one another. Distrust of government’s interference in people’s lives. Dedication to a rule of law that both protects and preserves liberty….As the party of ideas, rather than a mere coalition of interests, we consider vigorous debate a strength, not a weakness…. Yet we stand united today because we are the one party that speaks to all Americans – conservatives, moderates, libertarians, independents, and even liberals. We welcome all to our deliberations in the firm belief that the principles embodied in this platform will prove to be as compelling and persuasive as they are vital and enduring. We do not fear disagreement, and we do not demand conformity, but we do fight for our principles with confidence that the best ideas will prevail in the end.”Republicans pride themselves on being the party of smaller government, more individual freedom, lower taxes, and a strong national defense.Over the past 8 years, Republicans presided of a massive increase in the size and scope of the federal government. This led to the intrusive encroachment of government into the most private parts of our lives (wire tapping). Higher taxes have been camouflaged by using words like “fees.” In order to obtain a strong national defense, Republicans have spent like drunken sailors and activated our forces to the point where they are being stretched to the breaking point.So, in a court of law, what is the evidence of these people truly being a Republican? There is no evidence that they lived by the words in their own platform.These people accused of being Republicans presided over the creation of the largest bureaucracy in the history of the country—the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). This agency has been a colossal failure and a management nightmare.These people accused of being Republicans want more individual freedom, except in cases like Terri Schaivo. They wanted the state and federal government to usurp the powers given to her husband because they disagreed with the decisions he made about her medical condition.These people accused of being Republicans got around the issue of raising taxes by calling them “fees.” They are supposed to be a party of principles, not deceit.These people accused of being Republicans supported a strong national defense and spent money like a drunken sailor. But, they had no effective game plan to properly utilize our military and there was no exit strategy.These people accused of being Republicans must get back to their roots. Traditional Republicans have always stood for effective government, not “no government.” These Republicans strongly supported an interventionist government every step of the way to secure Civil Rights for Blacks (government was the solution, not the problem).These Republicans could care less about what you did in the confines of your home and would never pry into the choices made on behalf of a spouse or child when determining the course of medical treatment.These Republicans call a tax a tax and did not use euphemisms to hide their cowardice.These Republicans believed in a strong national defense, but would insist that our national interest be at stake before engaging our troops on foreign soil.So, upon careful consideration of the above, Chief Justice Raynard Jackson, declares insuffiencent evidence to prove that the above referenced people are indeed Republicans.Therefore by virtue of the power vested in me, I declare the aforementioned people not Republicans, but rather opportunist operating under the name of Republican.Thusly, be it resolved that this case is dismissed without prejudice.Raynard Jackson is president & CEO of Raynard Jackson & Associates, LLC., a D.C.-based political consulting/government affairs firm.
