OPEN LETTER TO PRESIDENT BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA

The late, Osagefo Kwame Nkrumah
10 July 2009Nkrumah Foundation Welcomes ObamaDear President Obama,Let me take this opportunity to welcome you most warmly to Ghana, a warm haven at the centre of the world and wish you a memorable stay.All the people of Ghana are ecstatic over your choice of Ghana as the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to visit. It is not by accident but by the recognition of Ghana as the shining Black Star of Africa, the country which proclaimed at the time of her independence that it was meaningless unless it was linked up with the total liberation of Africa. It did not however, rest on its oars but worked tirelessly to see Africa free.At the time of independence in 1957, the Vice President Richard Nixon was part of the celebrations. Subsequently, Presidents Clinton and George W Bush also visited Ghana. These visits are testimonies to the cordial relationship that exists between our two nations.There is however Mr. President, one incident that for some of us chills this relationship somewhat and that is the lead role the United States of America under President Lyndon Johnson played in the overthrow on the 24th of February, 1966 of the elected leader Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah.That America was instrumental in the planning and execution of the coup d’état is not in dispute as CIA declassified information has shown.A newly independent Ghana led by its most inspirational and visionary leader was then on a strong path of economic emancipation to give jobs and opportunities to Ghanaians. It had made education and health free and was at the stage of industrialisation and creating the conditions for a thriving economy. With the help of America, the Akosombo hydroelectric project had been completed and commissioned earlier on in the year and the Russians were in Ghana with all the equipments to kick start the Bui dam to give energy sufficiency to the industries.We were awakened in the early hours of 24th February, 1966 to a bloody coup while the President had been lured out of Ghana on a peace mission to help end the Vietnam War. The selfish collaborators who took over the reigns of governance were to set Ghana back.Evidence also shows how the World Bank and International Monetary Fund provided the advice and Technical Aid that halted and reversed work by the Nkrumah Government that was to bring relief and benefit to ordinary Ghanaians. Many have died through the resulting poverty and Ghana has not progressed much since that time.Silos that were built to store cocoa and maize were abandoned to rot, industries that had been built to ensure we produced most of the essential things the population needed were halted and the Kwabenya Atomic Energy Project was stopped and the reactor destroyed. The Project had been initiated to provide Ghana with nuclear energy and also to be used among others to reduce post harvest losses. As a matter of fact, Ghana’s progress as a nation was well and truly halted by the action of America and many Ghanaians have been denied jobs as a consequence.Ghana has been a victim of slavery, colonization, neo-colonization and the cold war. All of which have helped create the mental lethargy which has impeded progress and fuelled the desire to escape poverty by whatever means necessary that has entrenched corruption in our body politic and psyche. Change must come to Ghana and Africa.Mr. President, many Ghanaians were part of the body of humanity who wished and willed you on to win the US elections of 2008. Some of us followed the counting and collation of results and wept when you gave your acceptance speech. The dreams of our fore-fathers, Marcus Garvey, W.E.B du Bois, Kwame Nkrumah, Martin Luther King Jnr and many others had come true. Welcome to the mother continent, where it all begun for mankind but where resources have been plummeted for the benefit of others and the locals left in utter poverty.The change we need must also come to this continent. The developed world must realize that the world does not exist to satisfy them alone and that the world is safer if there is shared humanity. If we all create a little space and create a better world for the entire human race, we will be healing the world (to paraphrase the lyrics of Michael Jackson’s “HEAL THE WORLD”). We look forward to seeing under your watch the fusion of the energy and intellect of African Americans and that of the brothers and sisters on the mother continent to advance the cause of Africa for the benefit of Africans and the rest of the world.Mr. President, it goes without saying that the Central Intelligence Agency and the United States of America Government owe Ghana and Ghanaians an unreserved and unqualified apology for the plotting, planning and execution of the 24th February, 1966 coup and in particular to the families of the many who died on Ghana’s day of shame in this the centenary year of the birth of Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah.It is important that all countries of the world be allowed space to chart different courses to achieve progress for their people. It is remarkable the rise of China and the relationship that exists between America and China now and the emerging relationship with Russia following your just ended visit.America must contribute willingly to get Ghana’s industrialization back on track particularly in the areas of research and development of new energy initiatives which will provide jobs for our people. Create effective collaboration with our Medical and Research Institutes, and the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences and their counterparts in America to enrich each other. America must help revamp the Atomic Energy Project to realize the noble dreams of Osagyefo to provide nuclear energy for Ghana in these times of energy deficiency and assist in whatever way necessary to finish the Bui project which will have given Ghana energy for the past thirty-eight years.Welcome once again to Ghana, the true gateway to Africa.Please permit me to say a few words to First Lady Michelle Obama. I am certain that Ghana is your ancestral home and for some reason think you were instrumental in the choice of Ghana. Feel at home even though the period is very short. I will urge the Robinson Family to consider coming home and spending a little more time to get to know Ghana well.God bless Ghana and may God bless the United States of America in our new relationship based on true partnership to advance the course of shared humanity.------------------------------------------------------------------------------Source: Nkrumah FoundationAccra, Ghana, West Africa

    Well said my sistah! It is good to see that there are those of us out here willing to challenge mainstream thought. Your essay is well thought out and gives a very good backdrop to the current events of the day in Ghana and elsewhere on the Continent. As a people we need to read, study, research and understand history from the vantage point that you present here. Otherwise I continue to fear for our future.

    Thank you for this history lesson. BHO's understanding of US (& world) history is not an understanding
    shared by the vast majority of humanity. For him to promote the mythical notion that the US is a "democracy"
    and that they are all one big family, ignoring historical reality and the material effects of racial discrimination
    is criminal. Black people only got the right to vote just over 40 years ago!
    He seems unaware of the political legacy which he has inherited. The US is not in a position to lecture
    any nation about "democracy" or good governance.

  • Thank you for your feedback Emma, your so right and the sad thing about it is America does not truly need to rape africa for their oil. The time has come for Africa to rise and stand on their own power, If not now when?

    July 16, 2009 (LPAC)—In his address to the Ghana Parliament June 11, at the Accra International Conference Center, President Barack Obama shattered any illusions that Africans, or anyone else may have had, that U.S. policy toward Africa would abandon those advocated by the British imperial system.

    Obama made no mention of the IMF-dictated policies which which have ruined African nations with structural adjustment programs (SAP). These SAPs have destroyed the agricultural sectors, such that since the mid-1980s, the great majority of African nations were forced to become food importers, dependent on these imports for their very existence. The SAPs made African countries more dependent on external credit, which has resulted in debt service payments that exceeded the value of aid received, resulting in a net outflow of resources. The IMF and its lackeys blame this predicament on corruption of African leaders.

    Obama also made no mention of the collapse of the world monetary system, and the ramifications of that collapse for Africa. Obama advocated policies for each of the four policy areas that he chose to focus on, that were exact replicas of policies of the London-based financial cartel.

    Taking the approach of British system institutions, as well as George Soros's Open Society, Obama charged that African countries were failing because of corruption, and a lack of democracy and good governance. The Soros approach serves to focus the anger and demoralization of the populations in African countries, resulting from the collapse of their economies, on their leaders and local institutions, instead of the collapse of the global British monetary system. Obama stated that under his presidency, the United States would pay greater attention to corruption in human rights reports on African countries.

    Obama said that if there is good governance in Africa, then the possibility of prosperity will be broadened by public-private investments. Such investments will have to be approved by the financial sector of the British system. He said that Africa would be able to leap-frog over the dirtier phase of development by opting for the economically non-viable forms of "energy": wind, solar, and biofuel. He promised that the United States would do more to promote trade and investment in this area.

    On the health issue, which will worsen as the world economy continues to collapse, Obama promised investment to continue George W. Bush's "strong" [sic] policy on HIV/AIDS, and a public health commitment to promote wellness, advocating E-health initiatives.

    Obama also said that war criminals would be held accountable by the United States. He did not refer to Sudan President Hassan Omar al-Bashir by name, but this is being taken as a reference to him. Africans are wondering if "good governance" means that you are not allowed to defend yourself against a foreign-backed rebellion.

    His comments on Zimbabwe were proof that his knowledge of Africa is worse than superficial, and that he was reading from a prepared script. He stated that the "West" was not responsible for the destruction of the Zimbabwe economy. He apparently doesn't know that:

    1) the British agreement to grant independence to Zimbabwe included the demand that the new Zimbabwean government would have to assume the debts acquired by their then-oppressor, the Ian Smith outlaw regime;

    2) that the British government agreed, as part of the independence agreement, to settle the issue of land distribution, but reneged on this agreement with the blunt announcement to that effect by U.K. Secretary of State for International Development Clare Short in 1997, shortly after Tony Blair became Prime Minister;

    3) that when the Zimbabwe government subsequently began implementing land reform on its own, the British government retaliated by withdrawing all budgetary aid to Zimbabwe, and getting other industrial countries to do the same. At that time, the Zimbabwe government was then dependent on aid for about 50% of its budget. The economy collapsed as a result of the retraction of this aid. The collapse was blamed on the Zimbabwe government.

    Africans are also wondering if Obama's idea of good governance means, being subservient, foregoing industrial development, and doing as you are told.

    Demonstrating how completely he has become an Anglophile, Obama only made a passing reference to Kwame Nkrumah, the historic leader of Ghana's fight for independence from the British, which resulted in Ghana becoming independent in 1957. Obama said that at this point in time, "we've learned that it will not be giants like Nkrumah and Kenyatta who will determine Africa's future." He emphasized that this time, it will be the people of Ghana, as long as democracy and good governance reign.

    The British systematically conquered Ghana militarily during the 1800s. During the 1940s, the movement toward independence in Ghana gained momentum after the British opened fire in Accra (capital of Ghana) on a large contingent of former service men who were peacefully carrying a petition to the Governor to seek redress of their grievances. Joseph Danquah and other leading nationalists founded the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC) in August 1947, and invited Kwame Nkrumah to lead the group's campaign for representative self-government (but Nkrumah and Danquah were jailed after troops fired on demonstrators and a riot erupted in 1948).

    In 1949, the Convention People's Party, organized by Nkrumah, began organizing a mass movement for independence, staging strikes. The opposition of chiefs through whom the British had ruled, was not enough to sabotage the Nkrumah-led drive for independence

    Very interesting, especially when we consider that Zbigniew Brzezinski was/is one of Obamas’s
    Chief foreign policy advisers. AIPAC (American Israel Public Affairs Committee) virtually runs
    US foreign Policy, but people of African Decent in America are not allowed to organize to lobby
    on behalf of their kith and kin back home in Africa.
    In 2007 Brzezinski said that BHO “recognizes that the challenge is a new face, a new sense of direction,
    Of America’s role in the world”. BHO was selected to present this “new face” of imperialism to the world
    In order to restore the battered international reputation of the US abroad. BHO pledged undying loyalty
    to Israel and like all US presidents see Africa merely as a source of oil, gas, minerals which it needs to control. Now BHO is asking Ghana and by association all of Africa to obey US commands or else…
    BHO seems to be unaware that (American) Capitalism is in decline in fact it is in crisis, the rate of profit is falling, the US is involved in two unwinnable wars etc. etc. this is no time to be dictating to us
