“A man’s love goes through his stomach. A woman’s love goes through her purse.”
--South Africa
There seems to have been a welcomed re-surfacing of interest in proverbs from the Motherland of Africa. The electronic frontier has been criss-crossed by a variety of websites, each one worthy in its own right to bring the truth of what our ancestors stated in brevity on the subject of the day from ages past. However, for those who still into reading books and turning pages, such written works seem hard to come by.
Enter Gerd de Ley with the work: “The Book of African Proverbs: A Collection of Timeless Wisdom, Wit, Sayings & Advice” (2019, 328 pages, Hatherleigh Press).
“Where there is an old man, one doesn’t ask the advice of a young man.”
--Ho
The book has a durable feel, meaning that it will be one of those books that will be handed down from generation to generation. Gerd de Ley has come up with a great reference work, based upon his study of what has been passed around African nations and peoples for years. Assisting him in the translation of some of these ‘wisdom nuggets’ was David Porter. “The Book of African Proverbs” is one of those works that can also serve to ‘spice up’ speeches, term papers, or general conversation. Each proverb is, of course, grouped into nine categories…sure to please even the most dedicated proverb fan.
“What a child says, he had heard at home.”
--Nigeria
