Chicago-Midwest
Mothers in Charge – Chicago is a newly formed chapter of the ten year old non-profit organization Mothers in Charge, Inc. Mothers in Charge, Inc. was started by Dorothy Johnson-Speight in Philadelphia in 2001 following the tragic murder of her son Khaaliq Jabbar Johnson over a parking space dispute. January 2013 Mrs. Johnson-Speight launched a Chicago chapter of Mothers in Charge under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Tasha M. Brown, pastor of Galewood Community Church UCC, and Carolyn Champion, Founder and Executive Director of S.A.V.E.D. (Sisters Achieving Victory Empowerment and Dominion.) Both ladies were asked to lead the chapter because of the work they do in the community and their vision for healing a broken city. Carolyn Champion knows the pain of losing a child all too well when her son, Cortez Champion, was one of three victims of a triple murder on the streets of Chicago November 5, 2011, along with Cortez’s friends Chanda Thompson and Shawn Russell . Carolyn Champion states “not only does it take a village to raise a child, it takes the power of God’s unconditional love to sustain a child”, as ministers of truth, we must understand these viscous acts of violence are no longer a respecter of color or creed, murder knocks on the door of random lives, seeking to kill, steal and destroy…..when it knocks at the doors of our communities and families we must answer as ambassadors of love, understanding this is our greatest weapon of warfare”.On Sunday, February 3, 2013 Mothers in Charge Chicago will provide an opportunity for concerned residents of Chicago to bless one of the families recently impacted by gun violence. Shirley Chambers lost all four of her children to gun violence. Her last child, Ronnie Chambers, will be buried on Monday, February 4, 2013 and Mothers in Charge Chicago along with Galewood Community Church UCC, is asking for the community’s help with raising funds to help with Ms. Chambers’ expenses. Donations for the Chambers family will be collected in a special worship service, Sunday, February 3, 2013, all checks are to be made out to Ms. Shirley Chambers. The pastor of the church, Rev. Dr. Brown states “It’s time for us to combat all this hatred and evil with love”. We are asking all residents who want to make a difference to join us this Sunday at Galewood to show the families of these violent crimes that we love them. If people are unable to bring a donation, they can still come and show the Chambers family love. All of us can do something to help. All of us can make a difference.” If anyone is interested in donating to the Chambers family, visit our church Sunday, February 3, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at 1776 North Narragansett Avenue, Chicago, IL 60639. Concerned residents can visit Mothers in Charge Chicago’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/MothersinCharge for more information.
