3828522441?profile=originalLast night, an interfaith citywide coalition was joined by Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr., New York City Comptroller John C. Liu, numerous City Council members, and upwards of 2,000 labor and community activists at a spirited service in Harlem to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and demand passage of the Fair Wages for New Yorkers Act. The service, led by the Faith Caucus of the Living Wage NYC campaign, highlighted the growing citywide movement for economic justice, which Dr. King died fighting for more than 40 years ago. Bronx City Council member Oliver Koppell, chief sponsor of the Act, said, “For too long, the plight of low-wage workers has been ignored. As long-term unemployment, poverty and hunger grow; it is incumbent upon us, as City Council members, to act now to improve the lives of working New Yorkers. The Fair Wages for New Yorkers Act will aid us greatly in addressing these pressing concerns and deserves a hearing as soon as possible. Now is the time to pass the Fair Wages for New Yorkers Act.”

The New York Observer writes, "Nearly half a century ago, Martin Luther King used the pulpit to issue a far-reaching call for social justice. Clergy and public officials laid claim to this legacy at the Convent Avenue Baptist Church last night, where they enjoined the city council to pass a bill guaranteeing a living wage for employees of development projects that receive financial aid from the city" Click here to read the full story.

"For one night at least the spirit of Dr. King was alive and well in New York City," writes a report in the Examiner.

In the Bronx, Mayor Bloomberg claimed "I don't think government should be in the businesses of setting wages." Click here for full story from the Bronx News Network. RWDSU President Stuart Appelbaum responds: "Perhaps if Mayor Bloomberg spent less weekends in Bermuda and more in the neighborhoods, he would understand the hardship New Yorkers are experiencing just trying to live in the city."
