Ms. Modestin will conduct a talk entitled Reparations Through A PanAfrican Lens at 2pm.

Founded in 2016, with additional chapters in Colombia, Puerto Rico, Cuba and Venezuela, RCAA (https://www.araac.org) was established to advance the inclusion of the voices of Africans in Latin America and the Caribbean in the Black liberation within government, academic, and public spaces as part of the continued effort to liberate people of African descent from all forms of oppression.

A proud native of Colon, Panama, Ms. Modestin is also a National Reparations Commissioner and Board member for the Institute of the Black World. She is also the Diaspora Coordinator of the Red de Mujeres Afrolatinoamericanas, Afrocaribeñas y de la Diaspora, an international network of Afro-descendent women.

On the ever important matter of coalition building, Ms. Modestin has been profiled by the Boston Globe as “The Uniter” for her work in bringing the Latin American and African American community together and for her activism in building a voice for the Afro Latino Community. She is also a poet and writer perhaps best known for contributions to the AfroLatin@ Reader:History And Culture In The United States and to Women Warriors of the AfroLatina Diaspora.

Ms. Modestin is also the narrator of the compelling documentary Cimarronaje en Panama/Maroons in Panama, which chronicles the incredibly courageous unsung history of Panama’s Maroons. Panama’s Maroons were so well organized that they were able to halt the further advance of Slavery in that crossroads Central American nation.  She was also featured on the Boston-based PBS SeriesStories From The Stage in 2018. She has also just published a volume of her poetry entitled Nubian Butterfly.

Ms. Modestin is also a groundbreaking Social Worker in the greater Boston area having done pivotally influential work in Domestic Violence, the Diversity Training of Teachers and Social Workers, and more. She is a highly sought after presenter locally and globally.

The Weeksville Heritage Center is located at 158 Buffalo Avenue, Brooklyn.
