On Monday, April 4, 2022, the People’s Organization for Progress will host ‘The Million People’s March for Voting Rights’ to mark the 54^th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

          Participants will march from the Lincoln Monument, 12 Springfield Av Newark.

          The march will take place at 5pm

          There will be a press conference at 4pm.

          Organizers are calling for the march in the spirit of the epic Million Man March, the country’s largest national mobilization of its kind, and in the spirit of its own Million People’s March Against Police Brutality in 2015, a march that drew thousands of participants from all over the northeastern seaboard and was called Newark’s largest protest march at the time.

          In its first pre-march meeting, a call was made to secure the endorsements of 100 participating organizations “as soon as possible.”  Among the first to do so are Salvation And Social Justice, NJ Black Issues Convention, the Local 108 of the Retail Wholesale Department Store Union,

Force The Issue, The New Brunswick chapter of the NAACP, the South Jersey Chapter of the National Action Network, Food and Water Watch, NJ Steps, the NJ chapter of the Poor People’s Campaign, NJ Working Families and Our Revolution, with a number of more organizations expected to sign on today.

          “We stand at the crossroads between democracy and fascism. The attempt to thwart democracy did not end with last year’s failed coup,” said convener and founding chairman Lawrence Hamm.

          In addition to making the march a profound mobilization of this local historical moment, on the shoulders of its recent 67 Miles March Against Police Brutality, organizers are calling for the registering of a million new voters by October.

This mobilization is especially important for upcoming local, state and national elections.

          “We want to see millions marching to the polls on Election Day,” he said...
