The New Cookers, for this concert, are noted performers in their own right. Kenyatta Beasley, trumpet; Keith Loftis, tenor saxophone; Anthony Wonsey, piano; Ben Williams, bass; Enoch Jamal “E J” Strickland, drums are all “A” list first call musicians in the jazz community. Beginning in 2003 original members Robert Glasper, Richie Goods, and Marcus Strickland have also performed in this group. This band has also included Helen Sung, Keyon Harrold, Linda Oh, and others.
The New Cookers take their name from the legendary jazz trumpeter Freddie Hubbard’s 1965 album The Night of the Cookers. This Brooklyn-based ensemble excels in hard-bop jazz with a subtle hip-hop influence. Melding Jazz with contemporary rhythms, the New Cookers forge a bold, distinctive sound.
