PRESS RELEASE
Charlotte, North Carolina, July 22, 2011 – On July 17, “The Temple of Amun” had its first Sunday Devotional Worship Service at the Crossroads Charter High School. This Devotional Worship Service included African Egyptian (Kemetian) prayers, chants, yoga exercises and meditation. The mission of the Temple of Amun is to give the Charlotte community another alternative Devotional Worship Service that embraces an authentic African mystical religion. The Temple of Amun is affiliated with the Sema Institute of Yoga under the leadership of Dr. Muata Ashby, author of over 50 books on Egyptian philosophy, history and spirituality. The word Sema is an Egyptian word which means union. This union is the union of the higher and lower self.
The Ancient Egyptian religious practice was called Shetaut Neter meaning the mysteries of the Hidden Divinity. The ancient Egyptians (Kemetians) used the discipline of Shetaut Neter ( mystical wisdom) to build a great civilization, a civilization that was known and still is known today to be one of the greatest civilizations in human history. That civilization goes back in time to around 10,000 B. C. E. The teachings of the Ancient Kemetian is practiced by the Temple of Amun.
The service includes prayers, chants and songs translated from the ancient hieroglyphics. The service will be in both English and the Kemetian language. This is a great opportunity for the participants to learn an African philosophy that the world’s major religions are based on. The service is not a typical church service. The service starts with breathing, yoga stretching to harmonize and energize the body, mind and spirit. The stretches are followed by a devotional service which includes lighting of the candle, libations, burning of incense, chants and prayers. Prayers and chants are recited in English and the Kemetic language. The service concludes with philosophy and meditation. The main religious text used for this service is the Asarian Religion, Volume 4 by Dr. Muata Ashby. The Asarian Religion is based on an ancient Egyptian myth that teaches life lessons through the journey of the Egyptian Gods and Goddesses. Pieces of this myth can be found in the Christian Bible.
The Charlotte temple is named after the Egyptian God Amun who is the hidden essence and the creator of all things. In the history of Egypt, in the New Kingdom the power of Amun and his immanence were seen when the Egyptian people called upon the God Amun to clear the land of its conquerors which were the Hyksos (invaders from the North.) The rulers of the New Dynasty attributed their success to Amun. Amun typifies the strength and power that people need today to face the challenges of our modern society both individually and collectively.
