The rise of Black Tulsans’ entrepreneurial mecca, featured black-owned businesses that stretched for more than a mile with grocery stores, restaurants, hotels, movie theaters, medical and law offices, and two newspapers. The community thrived and reached regional and national stature. Booker T. Washington, was the first to call Greenwood “the Negro’s Wall Street.”
The BWS festival: A weeklong commemoration & celebration of Black achievement. It will include workshops & documentaries on building and sustaining an economic floor for the black community. It will feature 10 staged readings of short plays written by African Americans to illuminate the truth about Tulsa Oklahoma and other successful Black Towns established at the turn of the century. There will be a plethora of creative activities that enhance the powerful legacy and future of Black People in America and around the world culminating with a Rhythm, Blues, & Jazz concert/ networking Party extravaganza!
