We call these excursions The Spiritual Pilgrimage to the Mississippi Delta. The purpose of the Spiritual Pilgrimages is to shed the light of truth on the darkest that is Mississippi Black History and plant seeds of change in the minds of those who caravan to the Delta to bring forth a new and better Mississippi. Our caravanning to the Delta allows us to not only do research and teach the painful truth of Mississippi history, but also to touch and feel that history and be touched by it. The caravans makes the history more real and gives the history deeper longer lasting meaning for the caravaners. The Spiritual Pilgrimages allows us to empathize with the pain of Emmett Till’s mother- Mamie Till-Mobley, Myrlie Evers-Williams, and the families of Fannie Lou Hamer and A.J. Oakes. That empathy is the impetus that we believe will inspire our children to change Mississippi, and America, to a more a livable and equitable society.I want to invite you and your Youth Ministry to experience the soul-stirring inspirational history lesson that is the Spiritual Pilgrimage to the Mississippi Delta. Because these excursions are caravan trips, the cost is extremely low but the value is priceless. Simply, fill-up the church van’s gas tank and load up the youth and chaperons, get yourself some snacks and get in line. Each stop on the Spiritual Pilgrimage will touch the hearts of the caravaners and help them better understand the pain, anguish and humiliation of JimCrow Mississippi for African Americans. But at the same time, they also come to better understand the strength of character of their ancestors to be able to not just endure JimCrow but to thrive despite it. The dark genius of African ingenuity will sparkle in the eyes of the students and adults who traveled to the Delta to learn Mississippi Black History. They will be inspired to want to improve the quality of life for themselves and their communities by fighting institutional racism and enlightening others to the dark past of Mississippi History. The two 2011 Spiritual Pilgrimages to the Mississippi Delta will be on Saturday, April 30, 2011 and Saturday, August 27, 2011. Make plans to bring your children on either or both of these life-changing Mississippi Living-History Excursion.
