THE FEATURED PLAY IS
WHEN GOLD TURNS BLACK
A NEW PLAY BY RON WILKS AND LAWRENCE WINSLOW
Synopsis
Two heralded world class sprinters fed up with systemic racism and the mistreatment of black athletes; Tommie Smith and John Carlos are bound for Olympic glory. But after taking a course taught by radicalized sociology Professor Harry Edwards, both threaten to abandon their pursuit of a Gold medal by boycotting the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City. The boycott is called off in the wake of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, their champion, and staunch supporter. King's death sent shock waves of fear and hopelessness throughout the movement but it also fueled resentment and resolve in the hearts of many. Two men, in particular, make a solemn commitment to make a profound statement using the world’s largest stage, to protest racism in America. But first Tommie and John must accomplish the possible “win Gold” and leave future generations to ponder and debate their place in history.
