Dear Friend, The 35th anniversary of the harsh Rockefeller Drug Laws occurs in less than two weeks. Please mark your calendars and join Drop the Rock, Real Reform, New York Civil Liberties Union, Drug Policy Alliance, Fortune Society, Seven Neighborhood Action Partnership, Justice Works Community and many other organizations and coalitions from New York for a rally against the Rockefeller Drug Laws on Thursday, May 8th at 12:00 PM in City Hall Park. On the same day (May 8th) the New York State Assembly will hold a public hearing on the Rockefeller Drug Laws. They will hear public testimony on the following questions: *Have the Rockefeller Drug Laws reduced drug use and drug-related crime? *Should judges have discretion in sentencing people convicted of drug offenses to alternatives to incarceration programs? *Are mandatory sentences of imprisonment an effective part of a drug policy strategy? *What kinds of programs, supervision and resources would most effectively reduce the incidence of drug use and drug-related crime? If you would like information about giving public testimony at the hearing, please call Caitlin Dunklee at 212-254-5700 x 339. Please help us turn out hundreds of people by telling folks from your community, place of worship, program or school to join us on May 8th! We will send out a flyer for the rally shortly.
