  • "The Idea of a Black Radical Tradition" Conference

  • Apr 22, 2011 at 5:00am to Apr 23, 2011 at 2:00pm
  • Location: Columbia University
  • Description:

What does it mean to talk today about a black radical tradition?

Arguably, the idea of a radical tradition has been an important part of modern black intellectual life, shaping the constructions and reconstructions of an ethical-political connection across the rupturing history of black dispossession, displacement, and disenfranchisement. Part of the attractiveness, no doubt, of the idea of a black radical tradition is the way in which it offers an idiom of belonging, a vantage from which to narrate a shared past, and a perspective from which to imagine a common future. In recent years, however, in a growing number of books, we have seen the idea employed with more coherent force, perhaps more systematic intent.

This conference seeks to offer a critical platform on which to clarify the conceptual and political range of this idea of a black radical tradition. Needless to say, there is no interest in producing some kind of unifying coherence around this idea. We are, however, interested

In 1967 the then president Lyndon Johnson formed a commission to access the riots that swiped across America through 1964 - 69, which became known as "The Kerner Report".  This report concluded that America was "moving toward two societies, one black, one white - separate and unequal."

In 1998, 30 years after the issuance of the Report, former Senator and Commission member Fred R. Harris co-authored a study that found the racial divide had grown in the ensuing years with inner-city unemployment at crisis levels.

Today we find ourselves suffering from double the national unemployment, uninsured at one and half times that of white Americans (our infant mortality rate is double). Fifty seven years after "Brown vs. the board of education, the Department of Education r

  • The Day Diplomacy Died: National Cuban Film Tour

  • Apr 5, 2011 from 1:30pm to 4:30pm
  • Location: MLK Bread & Roses Gallery SEIU 1199
  • Description:

    The Day Diplomacy Died

A DOCUMENTARY BY BERNIE DWYER AND ROBERTO RUIZ REBO!

The US has waged a covert war against Cuba for over 50 years, much of it under the radar of the American public. The frame-ups of the 5 Cuban political prisoners in the U.S. and the case of Miami CIA terrorist Posada Carriles illustrate this. "Human rights" and "democracy" are used as code words for US aggression against Cuba. The "dissidents" movement in Cuba is used as a US tool to undermine the Cuban social system.

This new documentary by Bernie Dwyer and Roberto Ruiz Rebo, who produced the seminal documentary on the Cuban 5 “Mission Against Terror”, exposes the story behind the lock up of 75 “independent” journalists, trade unionists, and librarians in Cuba in 2003 through the eyes of four ex-Cuban state agents working undercover. The mainstream media never fully investigates the role played by the US diplomats in Cuba in controlling the "dissidents"

    movement.

In this film former Cuban undercover agents s
