Joined by Sha-Asia Medina, Director of The Village Afrocentric Cultural, Learning, and Healing Center, we will celebrate the first night of Kwanzaa with a Kinara lighting, discussion about the holiday, and a showing of the film The Black Candle. The first feature film on Kwanzaa, The Black Candle (narrated by Maya Angelou) traces the holiday’s growth out of the Black Power Movement in the 1960s to its present-day reality as a global, pan-African holiday embraced by over millions of celebrants. Q&A to follow. Zawadi (gifts) will be provided for all attendees.
