While other advanced nations are seeing continual increases to their quality-of-life indices, the only thing the U.S. has managed to consistently increase is its prison population. With a highly segregated education system that relies too heavily on invalid standardized testing and punitive disciplinary tactics, the school-to-prison pipeline is only strengthening for the poor, Black. Further, considering that the crime rate has steadily dropped and stagnated over the past few decades, this makes the negative correlation between declining crime and police militarization, or the rapid expansion of the prison industrial complex much more glaringly apparent and disturbing.
