    Ralph Ellison once wrote of the celebration of "Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, is a holiday in the United States honoring African American heritage by commemorating the announcement of the abolition of slavery in the U.S. State of Texas in 1865." Celebrated on June 19th, the term is a portmanteau of June and nineteenth, and is recognized as a celebrated in no less than 37 states of the United States and as of March 2010, 36 states and the District of Columbia have recognized Juneteenth as either a state holiday or state holiday observance.
     
    In Jackson, Miss. the Juneteenth Celebration will occur on Saturday, June 18, 2011 at the Tougaloo Community Center, 318 Vine Street from 10am-7pm. The Celebration will feature a special tribute to Mama Annie Smith and live entertainment from community artist. Juneteenth in Jackson will celebration freedom and provide an opportunity for local artist to showcase their talents and vendors to create a "Black Mark
