  • Commemorating Juneteenth in Brooklyn

  • Jun 19, 2008 all day
  • Location: UPROSE
  • Description: "JUNETEENTH" JUNE 19, 2008 Time: TBD LOCATION: UPROSE, 166A 22nd Street Brooklyn The Healthcare Education Project and UPROSE are commemorating Juneteenth by hosting a screening of "Unnatural Causes: Is Inequality Making Us Sick?" Juneteenth - June 19, 1865 – was the day that General Gordon Granger rode into Galveston, Texas and issued General Order #3 that freed the last 250,000 slaves whose bondage, due to the minimal Union presence in the region, had been essentially unaffected by Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation of January 1, 1865. June 19th—which was quickly shortened to "Juneteenth" among celebrants—has become the African-American addendum to our national Independence Day. Please join us for food, screening, presentation and discussion on health care and the related issues that arise from inequalities, disenfranchisement, poverty, and other social dynamics. We will be showing 2 episodes of the 7-part documentary with follow-up discussion. For more information please contact
