The Arts in Harlem: Just Good Business New York, NY, September 18, 2008--The Harlem Arts Alliance (HAA) today announced the schedule for its second annual HARLEM ARTS ADVOCACY WEEK taking place from Thursday October 2 through Tuesday October 7 in various locations around Harlem. With a focus on how the arts and business in today’s Harlem share the keys to Harlem’s future, this five-day exchange of ideas, from grassroots advocacy to city and state-funded marketing initiatives to local partnerships, will impact the businesses as well as the cultural institutions and individual visual and performing artists residing and working in the vibrant community of Harlem. HARLEM ARTS ADVOCACY WEEK activities begin with an arts and business partnership seminar and conclude with a special tribute by New York City Councilwoman Inez E. Dickens to arts pioneer Dr. Barbara Ann Teer, founder of the National Black Theatre. The week’s other activities include forums, and arts & business luncheon, special guest performances, gallery exhibitions, and a youth symposium on hip-hop. All events are free and open to the general public, with reservations required as indicated. A complete schedule follows and is posted on http://www.harlemaa.org/. Michael Unthank, HAA’s executive director, states “Harlem’s reputation and mystique is tightly interwoven with its global reputation as a cultural and artistic center. The Harlem Arts Alliance produces HARLEM ARTS ADVOCACY WEEK as a concentrated effort to ensure that the artistic sector continues to thrive as an integral part of the Harlem community.” The Harlem Arts Alliance is Harlem’s premier arts service organization with four hundred plus members consisting of individual artists and Harlem’s emerging and established cultural institutions. With its continued growth and development, Harlem is considered by many to be the most dynamic community in New York State.
