DECEMBER 7, 1969 - Thirteen members of the Young Lords Organization including (5) women are beaten and arrested by the NYPD inside of the First Spanish Methodist Church in East Harlem after making a request to the Pastor to be allowed to use space in the church for a free breakfast for children program.

DECEMBER 28, 1969 - In direct response to the Dec. 7th "Pastor approved"  police attack; The Young Lords take over the Church, name it the People's Church, and begin an 11-day occupation. They establish free breakfast and clothing programs, health services, a day-care center, a liberation school, community dinners, poetry and films. Thousands of supporters attend activities - it was a defining moment.

JANUARY 8, 1970 - The 11-day long "Take Over" ended when the Police arrested 106 Young Lords and supporters at the First Spanish Methodist Church; Which then officially became known as "The People's Church" as the power of the people in "El Barrio" forced the Pastor to finally allow those community programs which were initiated by the Young Lords.
