BRICK CITY PROJECT BARES THE SOUL OF NEWARK
Malik Whitaker-Hardaway displays the bones of the City at Gallery Aferro April 24, 2014
Brick City Project opens at Gallery Aferro in Newark, NJ on April 24, 2014 with an opening reception on April 26, 2014 at 7pm and will be on display until May 24, 1024. The installation features over thirty scenes depicting Newark life and historical landmarks painted using oil and acrylic on red clay bricks found throughout the City. Scenes include the historic Lincoln Statue, the City skyline on black background and the African-American Heritage Parade.
“The goal of the show is to highlight the better side of Newark through an art form as a way to re-educate the public on the wonders the city possess.” states the artist.
The on-going project began over three years ago with only six finished bricks and has grown to over thirty finished bricks. Various bricks have been on display at TEDxBroadStreet, City Without Walls Fundraising Event and featured in The Star-Ledger. This is the first time all of the bricks will be on display together.
"I feel great about the show. I've received a lot of positive feedback throughout the production of the bricks individually, so I'm curious to see how they're perceived shown as a whole." Malik Whitaker Hardaway is a life-long resident of Newark. He has been in the arts since the age of 10 when he won his first art award for a statewide campaign against Child Abuse and Neglect. Recently he has done commissioned pieces for Oscar Winning Director Lee Daniels and the Lincoln Park Cultural District.
