“Charles Tolliver is a truly great innovative artist, one of Diz’s (Gillespie) freshest and most skilled progeny in all aspects, compositionally, orchestration, and conducting,” to quote poet and author Amiri Baraka.
Tolliver and his sixteen piece Big Band will be performing for the first time in Brooklyn at this extraordinary benefit for Sistas’ Place. The concert will feature the music of John Coltrane's Africa Brass. Tolliver's Big Band will feature in the rhythm section: George Cables, Devin Starks, Jason Brown; saxophones: Bill Saxton, Marcus Strickland, Howard Johnson, Bruce Williams, Todd Bashon; trumpets: Chris Albert, Freddie Hendrix, David Weiss; Trombones: Jason Jackson, Michael Dease, Stafford Hunter, and Aaron Johnson.
