Afrikan Liberation Day aka Afrika Day 2014, witnessed what is sure to go down as one of the most important developments on the history books of the Global Afrikan Family. At an event held in Johannesburg, South Africa, a number of Pan Afrikanist organisations witnesses the launch of Uphondo Community, Afrika's Own Social and Communal Network.

Uphondo Community is designed to tell the Afrikan Story from an Afrikan perspective, to enable the creation, collaboration and sharing of ideas and information that is useful, intriguing and educational about Afrika and the Global Afrikan Family. 

Uphondo is a Zulu/Ndebele word which means horn (as in animal horn) in English. Amongst one of the very important communication tools in Ancestral Afrika was the horn. The horn was used during times of peace and war. The Ashanti people in Ghana called the "war horn" Akoben. The Adinkra symbol for Akoben symbolises vigilance and wariness. 

The launch of Uphondo saw Afrika make a mark and a presence with a big bang on the world of social media. Advocate Sabelo Sibanda, one of the co-founders of Uphondo and founder of The School of Afrikan Awareness said "it is high time that as Afrikans we realise that we are co-creators of our own reality and through Uphondo we are daring to invent our future".

The hundreds of people who attended the event, themed "We must dare to invent the future" from a quote by Thomas Sankara, were "edutained" by conscious bands and poets after being inspired by speakers from different parts of the Afrika and the United States of America and witnessing the opening of the site by co-founder and designer Valentine Masina. Sibanda motivated the attendees at the event with encouragement that Afrikans today are better equipped than the likes of Marcus Mosiah Garvey who, in the 1920s, led the Universal Negro Improvement Association/African Communities League, which organisation boasted a membership of more than six million people and had a newspaper that circulated right around the world.
