On Saturday, August 17, 2013, the Universal African Peoples Organization (UAPO) continued its tradition of keeping the spirit of the Honorable Marcus "Mosiah" Garvey alive through its 24th annual program celebrating the life and legacy of this great and powerful Pan Africanist visionary. The program was held at the the St. Louis Gateway Sports Foundation, 2012 Dr. Martin Luther King Dr St. Louis, MO and the featured speakers were the South African Ambassador to the United States, Ebrahim Rasool and noted scholar and contributor to MSNBC NEWS Channel, Dr. James Peterson.

 

The theme for the program was " Blueprint for Youth Empowerment in the 21st Century." Along with the guest speakers remarks were cultural presentations by young artists such as Loren D, El Thought and Thelonious Criptinite. The program began with a opening prayer led be UAPO Minister/General Rev. Elston K. McCowan, the singing of "Lift Every Voice and Sing" and a Drum Roll Call by Dhati Kennedy as the names of over 120 attendees were called. Amari Sneferu, the UAPO Organizing General Manager was the moderator.Nine year old Tiyah Jackmon and ten year old Xavier Silva expressed their appreciation of Garvey's legacy by citing several of his historic quotes. An additional cultural feature of the program was an audience African Fashion Walk with UAPO Vice President Safiyah Chauvin providing colorful commentary on the beautiful attire worn by the participants. Throughout the day, music was provided by UAPO Political Coordinator, Darrian Wigfall.

 

In attendance were supporters from Memphis, TN, Rolla, MO, and Springfield, IL. There were ten vendors selling an array of products and delicious food was provided by sister Marquita Daniels. 

 

In his remarks, UAPO President/ General Zaki Baruti  emphasized the need for Black people joining an progressive organization and encouraged the attendees to become part of the UAPO 144,000 membership/supporters movement. He also outlined the UAPO economic sanction program that will target the fast food industry, starting with the Miami, Florida based corporation, Burger King in response to the Trayvon Martin travesty as well as the ongoing racial profiling, police terrorism and mass incarceration of our people.

 

Earlier in the day and prior to the program, Mayor Alvin Parks of East St. Louis, IL hosted a private reception for Ambassador Rasool and Dr. Peterson at the East St. Louis City Hall. In attendance were over 32 business and political leaders of the city.Also, as the guest and UAPO members were entering city hall, Zaki Baruti and Dr.Peterson's fraternity, Omega Psi Phi was hosting a "Back to School Rally." The fraternity was providing free school supplies and haircuts to the many youths present. Accordingly, the frat brothers numbering over 50 strong  were very impressed with meeting the Ambassador and Dr. Peterson and saluted the UAPO for keeping alive the spirit of the Honorable Marcus "Mosiah" Garvey.
