Greetings from Khartoum!

Today a letter of protest to the building of Kajbar and Dal dams has been submitted to the Chinese embassy in Khartoum. In October 2010 the Chinese government owned company Sinohydro Co. had won the contract to build Kajbar dam.The letter was sponsored by the Supreme Committee of Anti Kajbar & Dal Dams which represents the Nubians of northern Sudan who oppose to the building of these two dams. The Kajbar dam is planned to be built on the 3rd cataract with Dal dam planned to be built on the 2nd cataract; the two dams will flood the area from Dal village at the southern part of the 2nd cataract (i.e. the most southerly point of Lake Nubia that resulted from the Aswan High dam) upstream to the northern part of Magasir Island which faces Dongola, the capital of the North State. This means that the whole area from Dongola down to Aswan in Egypt to be flooded and eventually evacuated from people. The Nubian fear that this is a part of a plan of demographic re-engineering that aims at removing them from their historical homeland a matter that will eventually result in obliterating their history-long heritage and identity along with antiquities and archaeological sites and monuments which will be lost for ever.

The submitting of the protest letter to the Chinese embassy was orchestrated with the a similir action taken by those affected by the Gibe III Dam on the Omo River flowing into Lake Turkana threatening circa 300.000 people on the Kenyan side with 500.000 on the Ethiopian side of the lake. The Chinese Sinohydro Co. is contracted to build this dam too.

The Anti Kajbar-Dam Dams delegation was lead by Osman Ibrahim, Amal Abdelmajid, M. Jalal Hashim, Aisha Sharif and Elhasan Hashim and others. They were admitted into the embassy reception to be received the Deputy Consul who promised to forward their protest letter to the ambassador.

تم اليوم تسليم السفارة الصينية رسالة احتجاج ضد بناء سدي كجبار ودال. ففي أكتوبر من عام 2010م فازت شركة سينوهايدرو المملوكة للحكومة الصينية بعطاء بناء سد كجبار. وقد تبنت رسالة الاحتجاج اللجنة العليا لمناهضة بناء سدي كجبار ودال، وهي اللجنة التي تمثل النوبيين بشمال السودان الذين يعارضون بناء هذين السدين. فسد كجبار من المخطط له أن يبنى بالشلال الثالث بينما سد دال من المخطط له أن يبنى بالشلال الثاني؛ سوف يقوم السدان بغمر المنطقة من قرية دال على الطرف الجنوبي من الشلال الثاني (وهي أقصى نقطة جنوبية لحدود بحيرة النوبة الناجمة عن السد العالي بأسوان) صعوداً على النهر إلى جزيرة مقاصر قبالة مدينة دنقلا عاصمة الإقليم الشمالي. ويعني هذا أن تصبح المنطقة من دنقلا نزولاً إلى أسوان بمصر مغمورة، وبالتالي خالية من السكان. ويخشى النوبيون أن هذا جزء من خطة لإعادة هندسة الخريطة الديموغرافية تهدف إلى إزاحتهم من وطنهم التاريخي، الأمر الذي حتماً سوف يؤدي إلى طمس هويتهم وتراثهم الذي يمتد بطول التاريخ فضلاً عن الآثارات والمواقع التاريخية والصروح التي ستفقد إلى الأبد.  

وقد تزامن تسليم خطاب الاحتجاج للسفارة الصينية بعمل مماثل اتخذته مجموعات أخرى متأثرة بقيام سد قيبي الثالث على نهر أومو الذي يصب في بحيرة توركانا مهدداً بذلك حوالي 300.000 نسمة على الجانب الكيني، بينما يهدد حوالي 500.000 نسمة على الجانب الإثيوبي من البحيرة. وتقوم نفس شركة سينوهايدرو الصينية ببناء هذا السد.  

وقد كان على قيادة وفد مناهضي سدي كجبار ودال عثمان إبراهيم، آمال عبد المجيد، محمد جلال أحمد هاشم، عائشة شريف، والحسن هاشم وآخرون.وقد سُمح لهم بدخول السفارة وتم استقبالهم في مكتب استقبال السفارة حيث قام نائب القنصل باستلام المذكرة منهم واعداً بتسليمها بدوره للسيد السفير.
