AFRICA AND SUDAN CRISIS

AFRICA AND SUDAN CRISIS, Editorial, Page 3, The Citizen, 30th July 2008, Khartoum and Juba, South Sudan"African aid agencies say the African-UN peacekeeping mission in Darfur is failing to provide adequate protection for civilians.A report published by a group of mainly African relief and advocacy groups, the Darfur Consortium, said the force was too small and inadequately funded. It was apparent from the beginning that the mission was going to fail, initially because it was built on emotions rather than based on rational calculations. We remember well when the whole world stood for Darfur, and that made it shameful for Africans to see others serving their own kin in crisis; Africans then decided to participate with any thing they had.The Darfur Consortium says UNAMID is ‘in danger of becoming the world’s latest broken promise’ in the region. The BBC’s Mark Doyle says most of the troops came from an earlier under-funded solely African force and the hope was that UN involvement would improve logistics. We always remember the speech of Omer Konare and Salim Ahmed Salim in the AU Peace and Security Council meeting in Addis Ababa when these two men emotionally said, ‘African problems must be resolved by Africans’. Unfortunately, both of them have gone and the problems of the people of Darfur are still burning. The role played by Africa in the Sudan crisis was very negative, including South Sudan and Darfur.During the 22 year war in South Sudan, with the exception of the neighboring countries, none of the African countries leaders thought about the millions of people dying in South Sudan. To suddenly appear in the Darfur crisis and offer obstructions by way of resolving the crisis was just a show. Our advise to African leaders who still live with ideas of anti-colonialism, is that they should not always bring their personal problems into other peoples’ problems by, for example, accusing others of ulterior motives, who are trying to resolve problems. If a person can save lives, let him do so, rather than leaving people to die."
