Donald Trump won the 2016 Presidential Election while losing the popular vote by an incredible 2 million votes!
At the recent State of The Black World Conference, Chairman Lawrence Hamm said emphatically that the election was “stolen through voter suppression.”
“This election was stolen and it was stolen through voter suppression.”
He said that as many as 6 million African American voters were not allowed to participate in the election from a voter suppression strategy that began shortly after the Supreme Court’s 2013 decision in the Shelby Cty., Alabama v Holder case that ruled a key provision from the Voting Rights Act to be “unconstitutional,” considerably weakening the treasured Act.
The march and rally will be an action of solidarity with mass protests that have sprung up all over the country protesting the election. It is also a condemnation of the Electoral College system, and a call instead for Direct Elections. It is also a condemnation of the weakening of the Voting Rights Act by the Supreme Court and the new Voter ID Laws that were created in some 33 states in the immediate aftermath, as well as a condemnation of the poll reduction and the poll purging that all combined to create the voter suppression that marginalized the Black vote in this election. The action will also be a call for a massive voter registration drive to offset that strategy of suppression in the future.
Finally, the action will call for the organizing of a statewide conference in March to create a Black Agenda to be addressed in the 2017 NJ Governor’s race…
