3828846167?profile=originalSitting in the Atlantic Ocean a little more the a mile off the coast of Dakar Senegal, Goree Island was one of many ports established by European slave merchants along the west coast of Africa to fuel the need for free labor in the New World and Europe. "Once the captured Africans arrived at the Atlantic, they were taken to one of the many slave forts that could be found along the coastline, where they would wait to be transported by ship to the Americas".(Understanding Slavery Initiative, 2011).

During the last almost 30 years ago I made countless journeys to Senegal and Goree. I am continually drawn to visit the 'La Masion des Esclaves' Museum or more commonly known in the U.S. as The House of Slaves. It's not a very impressive building, even small in comparison to a slave fort such as  Cape Coast in Ghana. However something tragically haunting yet spiritually enlightening draws me back to this place. I am inviting you to come and experience a small piece of the history and mystery of Goree through "Spirits Whispering in the Dark: La Masion des Esclaves" a collective photographic and interactive living exhibition.

"Spirits Whispering in the Dark: La Masion des Esclaves"
Thursday March 24, 2016
Butler Hall 1st Floor
12PM - 2PM and 5PM - 7PM
Bronx Community College

I am joined in this exhibition by Dr. Sayida Self and Ludger Balan of Che Nautical Edutainment historical presenter. We've also enjoyed the contributions of students from Dr. Self's anthropology class and members of the BCC African Students Association.

Lastly, a major impetus for "Spirits Whispering in the Dark: La Masion des Esclaves" is the efforts of the teachers and students of the Senegalese American Bilingual School (SABS) in Dakar.  SABS is an international school with 1000 students. The school has formed a collaboration with the Mayor of Goree island focused on bringing global attention to the Museum and its important history as a memorial to the more than 12 million Africans who were forced into bondage. The students and teachers are helping to upgrade the Museums facilities, training to be volunteer docents, and developing a national pre-k through grade 12 learning curriculum for schools. We will be kicking off a GoFundMecampaign to raise funds and increase awareness for the need for global financial and resource support of the House of Slave.
 ~
I look forward to seeing you at the exhibition.
