On Monday, December 26th, the People’s Organization for Progress will host an important press conference calling for the creation of a national holiday to mark the end of slavery in the United States.
            The proposed holiday would be called ‘Emancipation Day’ and would be observed on December 18th, the anniversary of the enactment of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution abolishing slavery.
            The 13th Amendment was enacted into law on December 18th, 1865.
            The press conference will take place at 12noon at the Lincoln Monument on Springfield Av., Newark.
          Last week, on December 18th, P.O.P. hosted a spirited rally announcing this new proposal.
            In the past, January 1st, the anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863, was informally observed by many in the African American community. In recent years, Juneteenth, the Texas based tradition, observing the end of slavery in Texas on June 19th, 1865 has gained similar popularity. However, no formal state or federal recognition of the end of slavery has ever been instituted…
