Monroe College Launching 12-Week No-Cost Coding Academy in the Bronx this Summer
The free program aims to increase local high school students’ access to computer science education.
Monroe College, a national leader in educating urban and international students, today announced that it will be offering a free, 12-week Coding Academy this summer for local high school juniors and seniors.
The Coding Academy classes will be held on Saturdays from 9 am until noon on the Bronx campus, starting on May 14 and ending July 30. All enrolled high school juniors and seniors may participate, regardless of their prior coding experience or level of computer science knowledge. The Academy’s college-level coding tracks were designed to accommodate the learning needs of beginners with no prior knowledge as well as those with more advanced coding skills eager to learn a new coding language.
Interested students are asked to register online after securing parental permission. There will be a mandatory one-hour orientation session for registered attendees on Saturday, April 30 from 2:00-3:00 at King Hall (2501 Jerome Avenue) on Monroe’s Bronx campus.
Monroe created the Coding Academy to spark local students’ interest in coding and programming, and to support New York City officials’ efforts to expand IT learning opportunities for high school students. Although the city’s Computer Science for Allinitiative calls for every New York public school to provide computer science instruction by 2025, the New York Times recently reported that less than 10 percent currently do so.
“Unfortunately, many of New York’s high school students simply don’t have the same IT-specific learning resources and opportunities in the classroom that many of their suburban peers do, which impedes their career ambitions in one of the fastest-growing sectors of our economy,” said Stephen Jerome, president of Monroe College. “We are proud to launch our new Coding Academy and provide students in the Bronx and elsewhere with the free, quality programming instruction that will help reverse that trend.”
Coding Academy participants will choose between two major tracks: Web Development or App Development. Students within each track will work together as a class on a group project. The Web Development track will plan and build a completely functional website, while the App Development track will conceptualize and create a game that they will submit to the Apple and Google App Stores.
