PRESS CONFERENCE FOR CORNEL WEST
WILL ENDORSE NAT’L MARCH AGAINST POLICE BRUTALITY!

On Wednesday, May 27th, the People’s Organization for Progress will host a special press conference where nationally acclaimed author-activist Cornel West will announce his endorsement for the organization’s national march against police brutality.
The press conference will take place at Bethany Baptist Church, 275 West Market Street, Newark at 12 noon.
The march and rally, called ‘The Million People’s March Against Police Brutality, Racial Injustice and Economic Equality,’ will take place on July 25th in Newark, and has already enjoyed the endorsement of over 40 local and national leaders and organizations.
West will be joined by Rev. Dr. William Howard, Pastor of Bethany Baptist and himself an highly respected champion of civil rights, and Lawrence Hamm, the founding chairman for the People’s Organization for Progress and the march convener.
The endorsement comes on the heels of a controversial clearing of a Cleveland police officer who was on the hood of a car where he and additional 12 officers fired over 130 rounds into the vehicle killing an unarmed African-American couple. It also comes on the heels of the indictment of six police officers in Baltimore for beating an unarmed man to death in their custody, a vicious act which sparked mass protests and civil unrest in that important port city. It also comes on the heels of Newark Mayor Ras Baraka breaking historical ground by creating a civilian review board for this city with full subpoena powers on April 30th in response to the issue locally. He is expected to also endorse the march and rally soon.
“Make no mistake about it, police brutality is one of the burning issues of our time, and it is high time that some real reforms are implemented to do something about it,” said Hamm emphatically.
Cornel West has written 19 books, including his best seller Democracy Matters. He appears regularly on the Bill Maher Show, The Colbert Report, CNN and CSpan. He can be heard on a weekly basis on the popular public radio show, Smiley and West, co-hosted by the critically acclaimed Tavis Smiley.
West is also very passionate about social justice and the issue of police brutality in particular. He has engaged in very high profile civil disobedience acts recently, including facing arrest in St. Louis in October in protest of the controversial Michael Brown police killing in Ferguson…
