P.O.P., PEOPLE CALLING ON NEWARK CITY COUNCIL
TO SUPPORT CIVILIAN REVIEW BOARD

On Wednesday, March 2nd, the People’s Organization of Progress will be among several community groups demanding that the Newark City Council endorses Mayor Baraka’s initiative to implement a Civilian Review Board of the Newark police department.
City Council will be hosting its first meeting on the question at 12noon in City Council Chambers.
Mayor Baraka initiated the Civilian Review Board in 2014 following a federal investigation’s call for reforms, including the appointment of a federal monitor.
“We truly have a chance to do something historic and groundbreaking here in Newark on police brutality and corruption,” said founding P.O.P. chairman Lawrence Hamm.
“It sends a powerful message to everyone when all of the proper players in the equation are united in the effort.
“It is only 49 years overdue,” he concluded insistently referred to epic Newark Uprising in 1967 that was triggered by police brutality…
