Associated Supermarket Group (ASG) reaffirms its commitment to the communities served by store owners of Associated, Compare, Met, Met Fresh and Pioneer supermarkets with the “Health and Flavor” Cooking Tour, created to demonstrate how easy it is to cook recipes that are healthy, delicious and have a Latin twist. This is an effort among ASG, store owners, the American Diabetes Association and the Bronx Borough President to promote healthy cooking habits to decrease and prevent diabetes.

Cooking demonstrations will take place at participating Associated, Compare, Met and Pioneer supermarkets. Consumers will learn to prepare healthier foods, identify ingredients and correct portions for healthy meals and make healthier choices when eating outside the home. The cooking tour will focus on the Bronx, which has one of highest rates of residents diagnosed with diabetes (12%), compared to New York City (9%), and state and national rates which are under 8%*.

The American Diabetes Association and the Bronx Borough President’s office kicked-off American Diabetes Month® with the first healthy cooking demonstration on Thursday, November 3rd at the Met Fresh Supermarket, 1188 Webster Avenue, Bronx, NY. The tour will run through January 2017.

"Enabling people to cook healthier with ingredients that are familiar to them in the supermarket where they buy their weekly groceries could make a tremendous difference to their health," said, Zulema T. Wiscovitch, Executive Vice President & Chief Administrative Officer for ASG. “We are very excited to be part of this initiative and contribute to the health of the community at large.”

“I will continue to support projects such as National Diabetes Awareness Month that have such a positive impact on the quality of life in our borough, our city and our nation” said Borough President Diaz. “Health campaigns such as ‘Health and Flavor in the Kitchen’ are important to improve the health of our Bronxites by providing healthy cooking food demonstrations and recipes, which can help reduce the rate of residents diagnosed with diabetes. I welcome healthy initiatives such as the National Diabetes Awareness Month as well as the American Diabetes Association and the Associated Supermarket Group’s involvement in this project, especially as we work to build a healthier Bronx through our ‘#Not62’ initiative.”

Chef Maldonado and the American Diabetes Association have selected seven signature dishes for the cooking tour. For more information or to become a partner in the ASG /ADA Healthy Cooking Bronx Tour, please contact Michelle Mendoza, 516-256-3100.
