Some of the original venues to present Hip-hop include Block Parties and community events. In this tradition, The ZYG 808 brings his sound and message to the people on The Phunk Hits 2018 summer tour.
Last Saturday was the "4 Corners Day" celebration in Dorchester, MA, a family oriented event for the community held in Mother's Rest Park. The next day was an outdoor performance in Lopes Square in Provincetown, where a crowd gathered to hear the young MC flex his style. This coming Saturday, it's the "Dennis Banks Tribute Celebration" in Washington DC where the inter-tribal native community and friends will honor the memory of the late organizer and co-founder of the American Indian Movement.
#RealBeatz is the tag that recently- turned 15 year-old MC and percussionist created for his unique style of rapping and accompanying himself on a cocktail drum kit. The kit's fat boom and small, tight snare sound is similar to that of a TR-808 drum machine, as referenced by The ZYG 808's name. Having been a part of The Phunk Hits summer concert series both last summer and this, the young artist and Soul Poets Records co-founder is very comfortable and skilled in relating to an audience.
"I'm finding that a lot of artists in the rap game rarely to never perform their music live until they have to. For me the audiences response is a part of my developing my songs." The ZYG 808
In the 1970's and 80's, community events like these throughout New York City, Boston, Hartford, Philly, Washington DC, and Cincinnati were the main venues through which Hip-hop found much of its' audience. In today's rap music scene, there are many, many mainstream methods and institutions in place for hopeful MCs to reach their audiences; however, as such top ranking artists as Chance The Rapper, Hopsin, and J Cole have demonstrated, building your audience from the grassroots remains highly effective. The regional buzz and pre-orders of The ZYG 808's E.P. "The Concerto" that seems to follow each of these performances prove that the approach is working.
Friday evening at 5pm, The ZYG 808 will be rocking live on the radio at 5pm along with The GroovaLottos on WPFW 89.3 in Washington DC. You can tune in to hear the "Live @ Five" broadcast by visiting wpfw.org
