During the harvest season, he was able to successfully complete school despite the fact he missed school every other day to help bring in the crops. He managed to complete two grades in one year before he went on to complete high school. He attended several colleges and vocational technical schools. He married Olevia Hines Brown in 1967 and had five children. Years later, he obtained an honorary Doctor of Letters degree from St. Stevens Theological Seminary. He has worked for several governmental entities and authored several books. He is the bishop of Life Changers Outreach Ministries, which operates in the US and abroad. He is also the founder of Life Changers Ministries Press.
